Dr. Kevin Berkopes

An educator and entrepreneur responsible for the vision behind Intangled Learning. Grounded in both mathematics and education research, he focuses on developing the science behind how expertise is developed in shared practice with others.

Dr. Christine Nemcik

An educator with 30+ years in K–12 and higher education, specializing in teacher preparation and curriculum design. With 20+ years in academic research and instruction, she mentors future teachers and first-generation and English-learning students.

Every week, we gather with educators to collectively reflect. The concepts and frameworks we introduce help educators navigate and inquire into the practices of their school communities - to see teaching as a practice of "We" over "me".

EDUCATOR

Lori

In this session, we were introducing the concept of Reflection and the different types of reflection, drawing from Dewey, Donald Schön, and others. The educators broke up into groups of three and reflected on what are they carrying that if solved would increase their confidence? The key insight is that change is almost constant in teaching, and there is very little opportunity for standardization. In order to improve our practice, we must reflect to identify patterns and anomalies to respond to.

PARAPROFESSIONAL

Amanda

In this session we introduced the domains of the Cynefin Framework (clear, complicated, complex, chaotic, and disorder) for understanding contexts we make decisions in. In discussing why best practices breakdown, Amanda reflects on classroom rewards and incentives as an example: what seems clear when she's running the class becomes a complex or even chaotic situation when another adult enters the room, indicating the variables that allowed the best practice to work have changed.

INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT

Karissa

In this session, we introduced the practice of “Communities of Practice” based on Etienne Wenger’s work. The key focus was as educators who are simultaneously engaged in college coursework, they belong to multiple communities of practice. We explored that tension of multi-membership and how to position higher education as a “partner in practice”. Karissa is reflecting on something she was able to draw our of her academic experience to improve her classroom practice.

Reflecting on adjustments she wants to make in Year 2 of her classroom: building relationships with students earlier so they know she genuinely cares, and seeing a student who had been a significant behavior challenge grow once that rapport was established.

APPLY WITH IWU NATIONAL & GLOBAL

After your pathway consultation, we will provide the information need to formally apply with our accredited university partner. IWU will audit your transcripts and provide an official evaluation.

PROGRAM SELECTION CONSULTATION

After being being admitted, the last step before enrollment is a 30 minutes consultation where we review your program options and help advise you in selecting the path that will meet your learning and career goals.
